Everyone can set numbering for the entire document in Word. However, most of the time, the final work should be numbered from its beginning, and that is no more fun. Find out how to deal with the numbering of your final thesis.
The structure and numbering of the final thesis
Every school has its own rules on how the final thesis should look. You will find them in the methodological instructions for the elaboration of the final theses. It is a good idea to find and study them thoroughly to avoid unpleasant complications when submitting your work. Neither the supervisor nor the consultant will usually notify you of such errors.
However, the numbering of final theses is very similar in most schools. The first page of your work is always the title page, then usually annotations, thanks and content – all these pages have hidden numbers. Therefore, the page numbers should only be visible from the beginning.
Instructions for correct numbering
The instructions are adapted for MS Word 2010. If you have an older or newer version, it doesn’t matter. The principle is similar. Typically, only the names of individual tabs and selections differ.
1) Number the entire document
Set the numbering for the entire document is simple and do the following: Insert ⇒ Page Number ⇒ Bottom of Page ⇒ Plain Text No. 2.
2) Display nonprinting characters
Non-printable characters indicate, for example, spaces, page breaks, or partitions. Especially at the moment, the character for the section break will be of interest to you. You need to make it visible in the next step to verify that the character is in place and that you are doing the right thing. To display non-printable characters, click the ¶ symbol in the Home tab.
3) Set section break
Pages without numbering need to be separated from those numbered. To do this, set the section break.
For example, if the introduction of your work is on the sixth page, go to the previous page, the fifth. Here, set the section break: Page Layout ce Ends ⇒ Section Breaks ⇒ Next Page. If you did this correctly, you will see an unprintable character for the section break, in this model example at the end of the fifth page.
4) Divide both sections
Subsequently, both sections need to be split. They are still tied after setting the section break. You can split easily.
Double-click the page footer to switch the document to the header and footer edit status. Then proceed as follows: Design ⇒ Link to Previous. No. Don’t be fooled, the “Link to the previous” button will be active – and you have to “click away” to split the sections.
5) Delete unnecessary numbering
Finally, delete the numbering in the first section. You do this the same way you would like to delete any other text. Get to the footer on any page of the first section and delete the number. If you need to separately number attachments, use the same procedure.
